Young Professionals

To engage the younger demographic in the Australasian Rail Industry, the future of rail, the ARA provides the following programs and opportunities for young ARA members:

  • The Young Leaders Advisory Board (Y-LAB): Launched in 2019, Y-LAB will harness the ideas of young talent in the rail industry and consider issues, projects and priorities on the ARA Board agenda, reporting into the ARA Board to provide its position, proposals and/or advice.
  • Future Leaders Program: Aiming to create and retain great leaders throughout rail, this six month program brings together emerging leaders from throughout the Australasian rail industry, providing them with a holistic view of the industry and its future direction, developing their leadership and management skills and seeing participants complete and present group projects.
  • Future Leaders Alumni:  To nurture the network the Future Leaders Program creates, the ARA launched an Alumni in September 2018 and through this Alumni, will continue to link young stars throughout the industry.
  • Young Rail Professionals Forum: Young rail professionals and their managers are encouraged to attend these informal networking events which are held in cities around Australia and include sessions to discuss key issues or opportunities such as mentoring and career pathways.
  • Young Professional Pitching competitions: To hear the new ideas of the younger generation, the ARA often includes a ‘pitching competition’ within the agenda of our major conferences; AusRAIL, Light Rail, New Zealand Rail etc. The finalists receive flights and tickets to attend the conference and ‘pitch’ their idea to a judging panel and the audience who collectively vote on the winner.
  • Next Generation Conference Scholarships: innovative ideas, usually on identified topics are sought from young industry representatives and in the selected finalists receive a delegate pass to AusRAIL.
  • Discounted rates to ARA conferences: To encourage the transfer of knowledge, discounted rates are provided for individuals 35 years and under to attend our major conferences; AusRAIL, Light Rail, New Zealand Rail etc.
